Dr. Houston L. Lumpkin III Obituary

Dr. Houston Lincolnton Lumpkin III, 74, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 surrounded by close family and friends. Born August 19th, 1944, in Athens, Georgia, he was the son of the late Houston L. Lumpkin Jr. and Louise (Smith) Lumpkin.

He graduated from Athens High and Industrial in 1961 and Morehouse College in 1965. He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War from 1966-1968, then went on to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1974.

Dr. Lumpkin began his solo practice with certification from the American College of Obstetricians/Gynecologists in 1978, where he was the first to use the Harmonic Scalpel in the immediate Tri-state area, and he performed the first laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy at The Christ Hospital. During the remaining of his tenure at The Christ Hospital, he continued to innovate, practice and deliver babies to delighted mothers throughout Cincinnati, Ohio. In retirement, he continued his legacy of service by attending our veterans as a physician at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center.

Those who knew Houston well understood that he was a lover of life. He enjoyed fine foods, wine, gardens and traveling the world. In his quiet moments, he appreciated music and took great pleasure in the soothing observation of birds. As a devout aficionado of jazz in particular, he was a long-time saxophone player from his youth and often played during church services. At his passing, he was a dedicated member of Allen Temple, where he previously served as a steward.

Dr. Lumpkin was a member of numerous organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., The Cincinnati Medical Assoc., The American Medical Assoc. and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Houston L. Lumpkin III is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ollie Lumpkin, his only child, Houston L. Lumpkin IV of Atlanta, Georgia: along with his brother Winston Jones of Athens, Georgia, uncle, Jack Lumpkin (Sondra) of Atlanta, Georgia, brother-in-law, Jason Archambeau of Atlanta, Georgia, close friends, Albert T. Wilson and Samuel Fuller Carroll of Atlanta, Georgia, and many loving nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends. Houston was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Fern Archambeau.
