Florence Hawkins (Echols) was born on June 27, 1933 to James and Leola Echols (Jennings). She departed this life on January 10, 2020.
Florence attended Withrow High School (Cincinnati) and had many accomplishments in her life, including going back to school at age 50 to attain her higher education (Associates Degree) as a graduate of Cincinnati State Technical College. After graduation, she held positions at the Cincinnati Water Works, Metropolitan CME Church (secretary) and the Cincinnati Fire Museum until her retirement.
Florence married the love of her life, Vernon Hawkins who preceded her in death on August 4, 1990. They were married for 39 blessed years. Family was very important to her and she delighted in being in the presence of all family. Of special delight was her grand and great-grandchildren.
Florence had a gentle spirit, keen sense of humor, and was a natural care giver who was known for assisting those in need. Florence met the Lord early in life and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Walnut Hills. Florence loved and was anchored in the Lord, continuing that devotion as a member of Allen Temple AME Church until her homegoing, Florence also had a distinct love of music and dancing. You could always find her on the dance floor (even when in her wheelchair) or head bobbing to the beat when there was good Jazz, standards, R&B or Gospel music playing.
Florence, one of eight children, was also preceded in death by her parents, James and Leola; siblings, James Jr., Vernon, Walter, Ronald and Margie L. Barber-McGuire, as well as her great-grandson, Damion J. Callery, Jr.
She is survived by: her loving and devoted son, Daryl V. Hawkins (Michele); grandsons, Damion J. Callery (Cherell), Dominique M. Hawkins and Devin V. Hawkins; great-grandchildren, DaShaun, Shaniece, Donovan, Darion and Daryl; and sisters, Dorothy Rodgers and Barbara Fields. She also leaves a host of other family members, friends and loved ones.
