Mary Elizabeth Roper was born on May 30, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Willie Dean and Elizabeth Williams. She was the first of all her siblings and preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Roper, Sr.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at First Baptist Church of Hazelwood. She was educated in Sycamore School District from where she graduated. In the Fall of 1966, she married Marcellus Mason and from that union, two children were born: Deidre and Melody. During a long relationship with James W. Lee, her son, James was born.
Mary worked for the U.S. Postal Service for a brief period before working at Internal Revenue Service. She also partnered with her long time friend, Barbara Moore and worked as a seamstress. Mary was a dedicated Tax Examiner until she retired in 2015.
Mary joined Greater Fellowship Baptist Church under the late Rev. Smith. She faithfully served in the choir, Sunday School and whenever her service was needed. In September 1990, she married Calvin C. Roper, Sr., gaining two step-children, Mildred and Calvin Jr.
She leaves to cherish: 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Tasia, Taval, Devonte, Tamia, Jaylah, Davion, Jaionna, Damarya, Kalinia, Jayden, Jeremiah and Katalinia. Siblings: Willie Jr., Stanley, Phyllis and Jason Dean, Cathy Pope, Kenneth, Derrick, Darryl and Rodney Beasley, Ari Nicole Christian and Jeremy Hill. Aunts: Florence, Irene and Reico Williams. Son-in-law, Phillip B. Horton, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Mason, childhood friend, Yvonne Davis, and a host of loving relatives and friends.
Mary was a devoted Christian woman. She loved to listen to gospel music, shop online, bowl, read, and will forever be missed by all that knew and loved her.
