Addie Louise Spruel Obituary

Addie Louise Gibson was born on August 28, 1937, to Reola Washington and Joseph Poole, in Marion, Alabama. Both preceded her in death.

At an early age, Addie and her brother, Jesse were baptized at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Marion, Alabama. Her mother taught school in the swamps, in rural Alabama. Because of that, Addie spent her formative years living with friends and their families.

She attended school in Sunflower, Alabama. Addie graduated high school at the age of 15. She went on to attend Alabama A&M for Nursing. She would then leave school after a year. In 1954, she moved to Cincinnati to help take care of her cousin, Pearl’s children. She was just 17. She and Pearl were more like sisters. Cincinnati would now become her new home.

In 1963, she met Johnny Spruel, and though they seemed like polar opposites, God knew what he was doing. They balanced each other out.

They would go on to have two daughters: Yvonne and Kimberly. She also became stepmom to his son, Michael. And later she gained a bonus daughter, Kelley Malachi Green, who she raised as her own, from a little girl through adulthood.

Anyone who met Louise, as she was affectionately called, was greeted with a smile and mothering spirit. She would literally give her last dime if you needed it. And sometimes it WAS her last dime.

She and dad made sure family had a place to stay when they came to town. Their home was the home house. Family was EVERYTHING!!

Addie worked 25 years at Good Samaritan Hospital. She took early retirement to help raise her first grandson. She would later return back to the workforce, to work at the Alois Alzheimer Center. In earlier years, mom loved going to the bingo halls. She enjoyed playing cards and watching reality tv. She loved to sing. Being from the south, she could cook like nobody’s business. But most of all, she loved being with family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Reola Williams, father, Joseph Poole, husband, Johnny Spruel and brother, Jesse Gibson, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory: Daughters, Yvonne Spruel, Kimberly Spruel Roberson (Will) and Kelley Malachi Green (Rick); Stepson, Michael Parker (Marcelle); Sister-in-laws, Betty Gibson (Jesse), Linda Cherry (Patrick) and Jean Love (Isaac); Grandsons, Anthony Horton Roberson, Cameron Roberson and Deaires Patton; Nephew, Montoya Holston; and a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins.

We thank you all for your love and support. We will miss you mom. We know that God needed you more and that you’re whole again. Rest up until we meet again.
