Althenia Moore Obituary

Althenia Nadine Moore was born on May 19, 1928, in Mantua, Alabama to the loving union of late Lumon Morrow, Sr. and Geneva Morrow. Althenia was one of thirteen children and was preceded in death by brothers, Lee Curtis, Joe, Lumon and Charles Morrow. Altheniadeparted this life and fell into sweet slumber on April 18, 2021 in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She spent the last few years of her life residing at the Woodridge Care Center and Norwood Towers and was known for her smile.

Althenia confessed Christ at a young age and attended Mount Caramel Missionary Baptist Church with her family. She attended White Oak School in Mantua, AL.

In her teen years, she went to live with her Aunt ML in Tuscaloosa, AL for school.  This gave her the ability to attend the Industrial High School and then she returned home.  She finished at Summerville Industrial High School in Aliceville, AL in 1947.

On November 2, 1945, Althenia married Walter Lee Moore, Sr. and they later relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio.  They were blessed with four children, Walter, Jr., Linda, Ronald(deceased) and Vanessa.  Althenia and Walter joined the ranks of the Cincinnati Black business community with the establishment of the Moore’s Grocery and Gas stations.  At that time, Althenia was known around the community as the Candy Lady.

Althenia was humorous, fun-loving and nurturing. She was an excellent cook and there was no dish that she could not make. Everyone loved her food especially her baked goods such as her famous sweet potato pie and German chocolate cake. Althenia loved spending time with family. Whether it was babysitting, attending family reunions & gatherings and looking through family photos, she loved it. Althenia could be found spending hours at the fishing holes with Walter or walking through Eden Park with her grandchildren.  When she was not doing that, she loved to call up her loved ones for spirited conversations. Until her health began to fail, Althenia loved attending service every Sunday at the Pilgrim Baptist Church as a long-term member.

Althenia was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Moore, Sr., parents, four brothers and son, Ronald R. Moore. Althenia leaves to cherish her memory: three children, Walter L. Moore, Jr. (Jackie), Linda M. Littlejohn and Vanessa M. Moore, all of Cincinnati, OH; four brothers, Council Morrow (Rita), Frank Morrow (Betty), Cleophus Morrow & Alvin Morrow (Ann); four sisters, Dorothy Spencer (David), Lois Fulgham, Zadie Fletcher and Sandra Morrow; tengrandchildren and a host of relatives, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and friends.
