Barbara Ann Hawkins Obituary

Barbara Ann (Trotter) Hawkins, 82, was born on October 7, 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Lloyd C. Trotter, Jr. and Mildred (Redmond) Trotter. She was the first born of four children.

She was a graduate of Hughes High School in 1962. Because of her love of children, in 1970 she became employed at (Princeton)Woodlawn Elementary School as a Educational Aide for 30 years assisting teachers, the school office, librarian and cafeteria. She wore many hats and was outstanding in all her roles.

Barbara was a loving mother of three children: Sheila, Donald and Michael. She was joined in holy matrimony to Vernon Allen Hawkins, Sr. for 43 years and became mother to Vernon Jr., Albert and Linda — “That’s how they became the Brady Bunch.”

She was known by many names to people who loved and knew her well i.e. “Babs”, “Barb”, “Bobbie”, “Ma”, “Mother Nature”, “Granny” and “G.G.”

Barbara’s love of God and strong faith, she sur[1]rendered her life to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savor at an early age. She was a member at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lockland for many years until she converted to the Catholic faith and then she was a member of Church of the Resurrection. Her church activities were varied and abundant: Choir, Bereavement Committee, Food Pantry, Rock of Ages, Senior Group and Travelers Group.  She also baked delicious Lemon Meringue pies and 7-up cakes for church fundraisers.

Barbara’s father once told her to see the world. That she did with her devoted husband. They traveled abroad to Europe, Canada, Egypt, Mexico, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Alaska and Niagara Falls. They were a GlobeTrotter couple.

Barbara was a valuable member of her community, always volunteering time and energy to a worthy cause and joining many worthwhile organizations. She volunteered for and ran on the Village of Woodlawn’s first Fire Department Life Squad, served as Chaplain for I-Dom-I Temple #1287, member of Woodlawn P.T.A., Board of Elections, NAACP, Unicef, Girl Scouts, We Thrive! And Woodlawn’s 50 Plus Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Allen Hawkins, Sr.; parents, Lloyd C. Trotter, Jr. and Mildred (Redmond) Trotter; brother, Lloyd C. Trotter III and his wife, Charlene Trotter (Shark); sister, Claudia (Trotter) Ellis; and children Vernon Jr., Donald, Sheila and Linda.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Michael Graves (Catie) and Albert Hawkins(Felicia); sisters, Johnnie Hammond, Norma Jean Ellis; sisters -in-law, Patricia and Jeanie; brother-in-law, Oliver; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grand-children and 16 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Barbara would always say, “And this too shall pass” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).
