Carolyn Scott Obituary

Carolyn Joy Scott, affectionately known as “Meemaw”, was born December 22, 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Ernest Thomas and Donnie Mae Scott. A routine doctor’s appointment on May 18, 2018 led to the discovery of uterine cancer in her body which she fought like a champion in nursing care at Clovernook Nursing Facility while closely attended to by her family — namely her daughter Lissa, brother James, and granddaughter, Tammie. On Monday, July 1, 2019 at 3:10 p.m. with her mother, all of her siblings, her children, grandchildren, niece Natalie, spiritual friend Mary, VITAS Nurse Jena and Pastor Delores Fluellen at her bedside, Carolyn was peacefully relieved of all pain and received her wings. She is preceded in death by her father, Ernest Thomas, stepfather, James Brown, niece, Angela Carr, cousin, Michael Carpenter, uncle, Fred Carpenter and aunt, Allean King.

Carolyn attended Dyer Elementary, Porter Junior High, and Robert A. Taft High School where she graduated with honors as a proud Senator in the class of 1961. While at Taft, Carolyn was a member of the Spanish Club. She received a certificate in her true passion, creative writing, from Stowe Adult Center. Carolyn also worked diligently to earn her degree in Computer Studies in 1987 from Southern Ohio College.

Carolyn was employed at the U.S. Census Bureau as an intake clerk for several years. Additionally, she was employed at the Cincinnati Board of Education and worked in sales at Lofton’s, Shillito’s Dept. Store, and Arnell Clothing Warehouse. Carolyn utilized her clerical, administrative, and computer skills at the Jewish Board of Education, Convergys for Cincinnati Bell Mobile Phone Service, and was also a driver's assistant for Petermann Transportation Services until she retired in 2008.

Carolyn was an active member of the Jerriel (Missionary) Baptist Church initially during the pastorship of the late Albert Lee Goodwin, who baptized her on April 19, 1963. She sang in and traveled with the Inspirational Choir, served diligently on the Young Adult Usher Board, and assisted with the Children and Youth ministries where she encouraged her children to serve at Jerriel under the leadership of Pastor Melvin T. Jones, later Bishop Michael F. Mack, Bishop Iva Durand, and now most recently, her beloved Pastor Dr. Johannon Tate. She also sang alto in the Greater Cincinnati Choral Union. Carolyn transferred her membership to Rose Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mothers’ Board under the leadership of Pastor Mark Flagg; then was moved in her heart to restore her membership at her home church, Jerriel.

Carolyn was expressly known for her nurturing and giving spirit, gentle heart, thoughtfulness, and at times humorous, sarcastic way and witty quotes and phrases, and color-coordinated fashion flair. She was an avid writer of plays, productions, and poems. Her preference was to never buy a greeting card — but to create her own, with her beautiful, left-handed penmanship and personal messages. Every-one enjoyed her famous oatmeal cookies, her favorite caramel cake, pineapple upside-down cake, chicken or leftover Thanksgiving turkey and rice, and the world’s best iced tea. Her hobbies included creative writing, reading, watching game shows, listening to music, studying Black History, dancing, and humming her favorite hymns. Most of all she enjoyed spending quality time with her friends and family, especially her great-grandson, Joseph Azriel Cash, and she never missed anyone’s milestone moments (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc.).

Carolyn leaves to cherish memory and celebrate her life, her loving Mother Donnie Mae Scott, her six brothers and sisters James H. Scott (Vicki), Edward Lee Scott Brown Sr., Larry David Scott, Wanda Jean Scott King (Ernest), Margaret Ann Scott, Paul Ferguson Scott Brown Sr (Diane); Aunt Elsie Carpenter and special friends Michael Burks, Mary Ellen Jackson, and Robert & Roberta Purdie.

Carolyn’s love, dedication and loyalty to her children, Darlissa Renee’ Scott (Lissa), Joe Shawntee’ Scott and James Antonio Scott was the joy of her strength. That same joy she shared as “Meemaw” to her grandchildren whom she nurtured and inspired to carry on her legacy — Tamatha (Tammie) Scott, Eric D. Cash II, Marcus Cash, Angel Conwell (Sofie), Jasmine Scott, Joberto Lewis, Lemika, and Tecoria Cooper, Shauntay, Ronnisha, Alexis, Keisha, and Keishawn Chaney, Ang’jaye and Jaynette Scott, Tyrece Lowe, Tyrell and Keyshana Mitchell, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, adopted children from work, church, those who provided care for her, and other loved ones.
