Charles Lee Murray Obituary

Charles Lee Murray (affectionately known as Charlie), was born to Eula D. Murray in Augusta, Georgia on May 29, 1929. At an early age, Charlie was preceded in death by his mother, father and twin brother, Robert Murray. God saw fit to call him from labor to reward on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 5:37 a.m.

Charlie moved to Chicago, Illinois at age 17 (in 1946) to live with his Uncle Tommy Wilcher. He later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 2021. He accepted Christ as his Lord & Savior and united with New Life Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Donald E. Garrett, Jr.

He joined the United States Armed Forces on March 6, 1951 - Company 545 Trucking Outfit; Rank PVT E-2. Fought in Korean War - stationed in Germany. He received an Honorable Release on February 21, 1953.

Charlie worked at several places of employment including Illinois Central Railroad, Kroger Cold Storage Packing House, Cadillac Dealership and retired from American Decal Company.

Charlie was an avid bowler; he bowled in several leagues. He loved playing cards (Tonk & Spades); you would find him playing for hours. Opponents had to sometime just leave the game because he was definitely not a quitter, he would say, “one more game”. Charlie had a love for all sports; Tennis, Baseball, Basketball, Football and Bowling. Although he had no formal education, he had a very keen intellect and could converse on any subject, on any level, with anybody.

He was one of the kindest gentlemen that you would ever meet and extended a helping hand to anyone in need. He was very respectful and also highly respected by many. To know him was a blessing and to love him was an honor.

He met and married the love of his life, “Ada” who preceded him in death. They traveled the world together.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a step-daughter, Loretta (Harry) Mohip; grandchildren, Jackie, David (Danyeal), Adrienne, Brian and Michael; a host of special cousins, Mary Welcher, Michelle Welcher, Lisa (Vic) Silmon and Lori (Derrick) Miles; best friend, Joe Tate, all of Illinois; cousins, Geraldine (Robert) Jones, Robert (Donna) Murray, Leon (Regina) Murray, Maryann (Leon) Fitzgerald, Barbara (Maurice) Graves, Loretta (Byron), Marie and Marissa Murray, Cathy (Marvin) Dailey, James (Shawnetta) Murray and Keith (Brandy) Murray; and a host of other cousins.
