Dalton Tyrone Vann, Sr.

Dalton Vann was born on June 13, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Elizabeth Rivers. He was one of four siblings and was deeply rooted in the love and strength of his family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jessie Mae Vann; his brother, Gerald Vann; and his sisters, Geraldine Vann and Judia Vann. On July 14, 2026, Dalton went on to his eternal home.

Dalton graduated from Taft High School in 1963, where he excelled athletically. His talent on the football field earned him a scholarship to Knoxville College, where he proudly continued his athletic career. One of his favorite college memories was ringing the campus victory bell after a Homecoming victory alongside his teammates. It was also at Knoxville College that he met his wife, Jessie Mae Lawrence, and they were married on August 17, 1968. Together, they shared 53 years of marriage.

From an early age, Dalton understood the value of hard work. He worked at Shillito's Department Store and Kahn's Meats. He later began a career with the United States Postal Service, where he faithfully served as a postal clerk for more than 25 years. Known for his dependability and dedication, he retired in 2012 after a career marked by faithful service.

Outside of work, Dalton found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid bowler and a devoted Cincinnati Bengals fan whose optimism never faded. Every football season, he confidently declared that this would be the year the Bengals win the Super Bowl, holding on to hope with the same enthusiasm year after year.

Dalton found great happiness in his family. He rarely missed an opportunity to cheer from the stands at his children's and grandchildren's athletic events. Whether it was a football game, basketball game, or another special performance, his unmistakable trademark whistle would ring through the crowd, letting his children and grandchildren know without question that he was there. That familiar whistle became a symbol of his encouragement and pride in each of them.

He gave of his time, wisdom, love, and whatever he had to help his children and grandchildren succeed. Known affectionately as "Papa," he was deeply loved and admired by his children and grandchildren, who will forever cherish his guidance, warm smile, and steadfast belief in their potential. His greatest desire was to see those he loved flourish, and he celebrated their accomplishments.

Dalton leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life his son, Dalton Tyrone Vann Jr.; his daughter, Candace Terette Vann-Davis (Travis); six beloved grandchildren, Marquise Vann, Terrin Vann, Brooklyn Siders, Dalton Tyrone Vann III, Micah Vann, and Malik Vann; his sister, Laura Rivers; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and all those who loved Dalton.
