Dolores Jean was born to the marriage union of Edgar and Mary Alberta Pharr on February 25, 1929 in Louisville, Kentucky. She answered her Lord's call to rest on July 1, 2022.
In the late 1930's Dolores and her parents relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, settling in the West End community. In her elementary school years, she discovered her God-given gift of singing and began nurturing her angelic soprano voice. In 1941, Dolores and her parents would move for the last time to Chapman Street in the Madisonville community. Dolores graduated Salutatorian of Madonna Catholic School in 1946. Later she enrolled in nursing school, from which she graduated and was licensed as a practical nurse in 1960. Dolores worked over 35 years as a nurse at Children's Convalescent Hospital, Dr. Clarice Reid Pediatrics, and Kenwood Terrace Nursing Home. She also drove taxi for her father, Edgar Pharr, owner of Madisonville Cab Company. In retirement, she babysat for family and friends, worked part-time for Kroger and for Glover Funeral Home.
Dolores and her parents were parishioners of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. In 1952, Dolores surrendered her life to The Lord Jesus, was baptized, and became a member of Greater Liberty Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Frank Lauderdale. After Pastor Lauderdale heard Dolores with family members singing at a backyard picnic, he suggested the Pharr family start a choir at the church which later became The Bells of Liberty Gospel Chorus (combined later to form GLBC Mass Choir), of which she was a faithful member for several decades. Dolores was a favored soloist and sang duets with her mother all around Cincinnati with the piano accompaniment of friend, Alice Jean Williams, beloved songs like, “I Do, Don’t You”, “I’m Grateful” and “The Lord Will Make a Way Somehow”. In her later years, she could be seen sitting on the 3rd pew every Sunday morning singing and encouraging others to worship. Even up until the last days of her earthly life, she could be overheard humming hymns and singing gospel songs.
On May 20, 1960, Dolores married the love of her life, Edward “Buster” Mason Sr. She was a caring and devoted wife. She became loving mother to Edward “Leroy” Mason, Jr. and Yolanda Veronica Mason. Motherhood fit Dolores, and she adored her children. Her love and pride in her daughter showed on her face right up until called home. All her children, grandchildren, and godchildren can attest that she is an AWESOME MOTHER. She loved being with family, whether it was enjoying a meal, playing games, watching videos, or celebrating holidays, especially Christmas.
Dolores Mason was also a sho' nuf' PRAYER WARRIOR! She stayed on her face before The Lord, interceding on behalf of her family, friends, church and even strangers. God allowed her to encourage the many people he placed in her circle of influence, uplifting and comforting others along life's journey. The love she received and experienced from God was the very love she displayed and gave away to others. If you said, "I love you", she would always reply, "love you more".
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Mary Alberta, husband, Edward L. Mason, Sr. son, Edward L. Mason, Jr. and granddaughter, Sharlene Mason. She leaves to carry-on her legacy of faith and love: daughter, Yolanda V. Norman (Kim); niece, Vernetta Lewis; grandchildren, Shannon Mason, Jovan Mason, Adria Maples (Douglas), Erin Phillips (William); great-grandchildren, Carlene Harvey (Gregory), Matthew Mason (Zuliakha), Aniya, Angelise, and Quince Mason, Tianna Hill (Vincent), Ava and Elgin Phillips; additional grandchildren, cherished godchildren, beloved cousins, and special friends
