Dorothy Griffin was born on January 6, 1927 in Georgiana, Alabama to the late Jonas and Mary Haywood. Dorothy “Mudd” as she was affectionately called, accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She joined and was an active member of New Vision Missionary Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio until her health began to fail. She then became a resident of Veranda Gardens Nursing Home where she regularly attended worship services. Dorothy enjoyed spending hours shopping, specifically at Macy’s downtown, at Findlay Market, and dining as often as possible at the Golden Corral. Dorothy supported her family by working in several private homes for over 30 years. She also enjoyed babysitting and the families she assisted valued her commitment.
Dorothy’s eldest child is Bettie Jean (Williams) Dunn (deceased). On November 21, 1946, Dorothy and the late Charlie H. Smith were joined together in holy matrimony and to that union were born, Mary Frances (Smith) Martin (deceased) and Charles Lee Smith. At the age of 28, Dorothy relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio with her three children.
Preceding her in death are her father and mother, Jonas and Mary (McConico) Haywood; daughters, Bettie Jean (Williams) Dunn and Mary Frances (Smith) Busch; and grandson, Quentin Smith.
Her life will continue to be celebrated by those she leaves behind: her devoted son, Charles Lee Smith; grandchildren, Sandra (Arthur) Wallace, Carmen Williams, Douglas (Robin) Barnett, Charlie Lee (Tonya) Smith, Jr., Tashia (LaDon) Laney, Darrell Barnett, Carol Walker, Charles Lamont (Denita) Smith, Tawanna Hines, Toni (Timothy) Smith and Kimberly Bolten; a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed the support of her dear friends, Essie Turner (deceased), Clarie Johnson (deceased), Margaret Lumpkin and Pat Williams.
