Dorothy L. Wright Obituary

Dorothy Louise Beck was born on August 26, 1924, in McCarley, Mississippi. She was the youngest of five children and the only girl to the union of Roscoe Sr. and Estella Beck. Dorothy received her elementary education from the family Beck School, and graduated from Grenada Colored High School in 1945.

Dorothy was reared with love and appreciation for God and accepted Christ at a young age. On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, God commissioned his heavenly angels to carry her home. She left a tremendous void in our hearts, but we have fond memories and divine assurance that she is now delivered, healed, and free. Dorothy, rest now in your Master’s care.

On February 2, 1946, George Wright was blessed to become the husband of Dorothy Louise Beck. They were married for 47 years before he was called to his new home in heaven with God in 1993.

Dorothy moved to Los Angeles with her husband and lived there most of her life. She joined Friendship Primitive Baptist Church under the leadership of Elder J.M. Jenkins. She was a faithful and dedicated member and served on the Mother’s Board. She was affectionately known as Mother Wright, and was the last of the original church mothers.

Mother Wright was a Sunday School and BTU Teacher. She was also a member of the Senior Choir and served with the Missions.

Mother Wright was always involved in church programs and activities. Her church family, Friendship Primitive Baptist Church always made sure Mother Wright had transportation to and from church, doctor’s appointments and other various appointments.

In her public job, she worked several years for the LAPD as a Crossing Guard until her eyesight began to fail her.

When she could no longer live on her own, her family relocated her to Cincinnati, Ohio to be closer to her brother, Springfield and family. Dorothy would later become a resident of Glendale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center until the time of her passing.

One of her favorite sayings, “I’m too blessed to be stressed.”

Up until two days before her passing, she was still singing melodies to Heaven.

Dorothy Wright was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe Sr. and Estella Beck; her husband, George Wright; and four brothers, Roscoe Jr., Springfield, Alfonso and James Beck.

She leaves to cherish in her memory: nieces, Carolyn Beck Addison, Lola Beck, Evelyn Carter, Joyce Evans and Juanda Beck Jones; nephews, Donald and Marvin Beck; a host of great nieces, nephews, relatives, life-long friends, and her Church Family, Friendship Primitive Baptist Church.
