Dorothy (Dot or Dottie) Mae Todd, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones. She lived a life full of love, service, and devotion. She was born on November 24, 1936, to Minva Rhodes and George Green, then later adopted by her aunt Mary Nee (Smith) and George Todd. Dorothy has now joined them in heavenly peace.
Dorothy worked at the US Post Office and VA for a short time. She then went to work with the IRS for nearly 31 years, where she retired as an Adjustment/Correspondence agent. After retirement, she did not let the grass grow underneath her feet. She embraced her most cherished role—caring for her two grandchildren full-time for over 12 years. She was the steady presence who picked them up from school, took them to extracurricular activities, and supported them every step of the way. As a bonus, sometimes she had dinner cooked when her daughter and son-in-law returned home from work. She was a huge blessing! As if her grandchildren didn’t keep her busy enough, she also was a crossing guard for Wyoming elementary school for many years.
Dorothy’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a devoted member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for over 40+ years, she served in many capacities including singing in the choir and being a Seasoned Saints member. She also was a member of the Bread and Thread group that met at Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church. Their passion was knitting blankets, making quilts or crafting anything to comfort the sick and shut in. Dorothy had a passion for traveling. She and her cousin Karen traveled around the world. Dorothy also traveled with her church family under the Mt. Zion leadership of Rev. Henry Jones to many places like Israel and Egypt. She brought joy and companionship to her church community, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Dorothy was renowned for her culinary talents, particularly her lemon meringue pies and pound cakes, which were staples at family gatherings and church celebrations. She was also known for her sharp wit and her ability to speak her mind, but she demonstrated her love through her actions. She consistently showed up for her family and friends, embodying strength, care, and unwavering devotion.
Her memory will be cherished by her family, friends, church community, and all whose lives she touched. Dorothy Mae Todd will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Lisa (Ken) Anderson, son Geoffrey Todd, granddaughter Lauren Anderson, grandson Yosef Ben Yisrael, niece Diana Hilson, nephew Eric Hilson, cousins Karlton (Judy) Rhodes, Brian (Gloria) Rhodes, Anita (Johnny) Wilkerson, sisters Nellie Combs, Naomi Blanks, Angie Green, brothers Stanley and Gary Hilson, Roger Green and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She also leaves her “monthly family dinner friends”: Gary & Linda Dixon, Stephanie & Dave Clay, Jackie Chenault and Dede Longmire.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her: Cousin Karen Rhodes, sisters Linda Hilson and Ruth Ann Skelton, brothers Richard Green (aka Dickey), George Green (aka Cakes), and Phillip Green.
