Angelene Jamison-Hall was born on January 30, 1947 in Rockingham County, North Carolina, to Walter and Berniece Johnson. She was the oldest of 3 children, having a younger brother, Theodore Johnson, a younger sister, Bessie Pearl (Johnson) Obey. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death.
Angelene began her formative years living on a farm with her family, where her parents were sharecroppers. By the time she was a teenager, they had left the farm and moved into a house in the city of Reidsville. She was a Valedictorian graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in 1965, and went on to attend the all-girls HBCU, Bennett College, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Although she was a math whiz and initially majored in the subject, she acquired a love for literature, especially fiction, and graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English Literature in 1969. She received her Master's degree in English Literature in 1970 from The University of Cincinnati, and completed her PhD in African-American Studies, with a concentration in Literature and Drama, from the Union Institute and Graduate School in 1974.
While pursuing her studies, Angelene met and married Mann Dra'Cos "Drake" Jamison with whom she shares her only child, a daughter, Binta Jamison. She later married Leslie Virgil Hall with whom she shared a wonderful, 39-year marriage until her transition.
Angelene has since published many articles and a memoir entitled, Duck Summer: A Dialysis Odyssey, and has collaborated with her daughter, Binta, on a collection of short stories and a stage play, both which are in process of being published and produced. Her career has been substantial and fulfilling, receiving numerous awards and accolades, sharing mutual admiration with her students, especially teaching in the African-American Studies Department at the University of Cincinnati. Her years as Department Head and President of UBAFAS (the United Black Association of Faculty, Administrators and Staff) were also very productive. She was respected and admired by administrators, colleagues and students, not just because of her work, but also because she treated everyone the same. She retired as a tenured professor after 39 years and earned Emeritus status.
Angelene was also active in the church for many years. During her membership at Calvary United Methodist Church, she served as the Lay Leader and Chairs of both the Administrative Council and the Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. She was also equally involved at New Vision United Methodist Church once she transferred her membership. She was the Chair of the New Vision Health and Wellness Committee and served on The Food Pantry Committee.
In addition to her work at the University and the church, she served on multiple boards and committees in the community. Angelene was a Board member of Black Career Women, Inc. and served on the board for the Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. She was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Angelene leaves behind her loving husband, Leslie, a daughter, Binta Jamison (Mamadou), God Mother Mattie Walton, sisters-in-Law Elaine Johnson, Deborah Ann Brewster, Gwendolyn Dean, Jackie Brewster Brown, Annette Hall and Tricia Brewster, brothers-in-law Angelo Dean, Alvin Hall, JohnBrewster, Mark Brewster, and Matthew Brewster, her dearest nieces Angelena Gray (Decarlo) and Regina Brandon (Lorenzo), a host of cousins, other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and decades-long friendships. She will be missed more than anyone can imagine.
