Earl Hocker Obituary

Earl Aloyd Hocker was born in Howardsville, Virginia to the late Lucille and Ned Hocker on November 4, 1934. He departed this life with loved ones by his side on January 28, 2024.

Earl was a kind and loving child who adored his family. As a youngster, he and his sisters were relocated to Cincinnati to live with their grandmother, Momma Carrie, following the passing of their mother. He joined church at an early age and attended First Baptist Church of Walnut Hills. Earl attended Withrow High School before joining the Army in 1952, from which he was honorably discharged.

In 1966, he met the love of his life, Delores, to whom he was wed for 57 years as he entered the Wiggins family village. Earl loved and proudly fathered Delores’s sons, Butch and Aubrey, with whom he had a beautiful relationship, as they affectionately called him “Pops.” He was known as “Unc“ or simply “Uncle Earl” to his many nieces and nephews. He was an excellent husband, provider, father and friend. He loved everyone and always had Juicy Fruit gum in his pocket for the children.

Earl was an intelligent and dependable hard worker who showed his family the benefits of how being dependable on the job pays huge dividends later in life. He retired from Cincinnati Milacron after many years of service. He was our family electrician and could fix anything. Whenever a family member or friend had a serious electrical wiring problem beyond changing a light bulb, call Earl and he would always show up strapped with his tool belt and tools and solve the problem. He was a man of many trades.

Earl really enjoyed playing Bid Whist, especially when he was the partner of his best friend, Charles Hogan, Sr. simply called “Hogan” by Earl and “Hogan” called Earl simply “Hoc”. Hoc and Hogan made a formidable pair of bid whist partners! Earl loved history and the history channel, nature and the nature channel, and being outdoors just relaxing and sitting on his porch, where he delighted in his beautiful landscaping. He was always good company, greeted you with a smile and was easy to be around to laugh and talk with.

Earl leaves to celebrate and cherish his memory: his loving wife, Delores Vivian Hocker; sisters, Eva Pierce and Kathy (Chet) Holloman of Newcastle, Delaware, Joyce Calloway and Shirley Knox of Charlottesville, Virginia; brothers-in-law, Robert Pouncey and George Mitchell; grandsons, Johnathan Ledford and Virgil (Sherell) Ledford; great-grandsons, Jaden and Terrence; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Waiting to greet him into heaven, along with his parents, were his sisters, Rose, Mary, Carrie and Gladys; sons, Butch and Aubrey; sisters-in-law, Carrie, Marguerite and Rhetta Jean; and best friend and bid whist partner, Hogan. Earl will be sorely missed…
