Eddie Lee Mallory was born February 10, 1936, in Conecuh County, Evergreen Alabama. His parents were Malaria Mallory and Archie R. Walker Sr. Two other brothers were born from this union, Willie Calvin Mallory and Lavorn Mallory.
Eddie graduated from Conecuh High Training School. As a student he excelled as a saxophone player. His skills as a basketball player were such that he was considered for a scholarship as a ninth grader.
After high school, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and began working at Keebler’s Bakery. He simultaneously earned his barber’s license and became a Master Barber. Eddie opened his own barbershop in 1960 at Clark and John Street. For 12 years, he had a successful business. He retired from Keebler’s as a Machinist after 40 years in 1998.
Eddie’s father, Archie married Carrie Henderson and from this union, six siblings were born: three sisters, Sherry Walker, Thea Walker and Janice Walker Cleveland, and three brothers, Archie R. Walker, Jr., Warron L. Walker and Bron T. Walker.
Eddie met the love of his life, Mae Tevis. From this loving relationship, one son, David Mallory was born. David has a son named Bryan and grandson, Casius. Eddie was the father of another son, Eddie James Mallory (deceased). Several relatives reside in Cincinnati, Ohio: Renita Mallory Terry, his niece who has had a long-time loving relationship with her Uncle Eddie, since she was a little girl. Renita has been very supportive to Eddie since he developed recent health issues. He particularly looked forward to the Sunday home cooking she prepared for him weekly. Ernest Walker, a cousin, has made an effort to deliver help and support to Eddie on a consistent basis. Often providing professional support. His neighbor, Al Chatfield served Eddie as a favored friend, always helping Eddie without expecting, and always refusing, any form of compensation. A true friend.
Eddie Mallory was a Great Mason. Eddie Mallory loved Masonry and Masonry and his brothers loved Eddie Mallory. He was raised a Master Mason in GOTHIC LODGE #122 in 1965, and became the 13th Worshipful Master in 1974. He served on a multitude of committees including: budget and finance, ritual, funeral team, banquet, Jazz Festival, education/Taft High School and lodge exchange. He served as a trustee of Gothic Lodge for many years. He was a Royal Arch Mason, member of Sinai Temple, AEAONMS SHRINE, a member of King Solomon Consistory 59, Crowned a 33º Mason, and a Sovereign Grand Inspector General. Eddie was not just a member of these organizations, but a faithful contributor, in effort, presences, time and personal financial support.
Eddie believed, “To whom much is given, much is required.” He sought independence, stability and advancement. Being the oldest and most ambitious, he played an important role in making the Mallory family migration to the North possible. He worked first to introduce entrepreneurship, buying multiple properties to set a standard of consistent economic growth. He established working relationships and community support initiatives, providing housing, employment and educational opportunities for his friends and family.
He was also the life of the party and believed in family and fellowship. He introduced and funded the Mallory Family Reunion and was instrumental in everyone commuting to attend the Jazz Festival each year. He touched so many people’s lives. He was a natural giver, and he loved his neighbors, family and friends. His laughter, his smile and his love will be missed.
