Edward Murray, Jr. Obituary

Edward Murray, Jr. was born to the parents of the late Margaret and Edward Murray, Sr. in Lincoln Heights, Ohio at 275 Adams Street. As a young boy, the family moved to Hazelwood, Ohio. Edward, Rock or June as he was known to all, was the fourth eldest of eight children. June gave his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized on July 14, 1957 by the late Rev. Fred Stockdale. He was a powerful tenor and loved to sing. June sung in the Mass Choir and was one of the lead singers with his beloved Male Chorus at Second Baptist. He was a devoted Usher and took his post seriously.

Edward or Eddie, as his classmates called him, graduated from Sycamore High School in 1959 and was an outstanding athlete which earned him a spot in Sycamore’s Hall of Fame, Class of 2022. Edward, best known as Rock amongst his friends was a master switch hitter and a skilled catcher in men’s softball. Rock enjoyed his sports and dedicated his life to helping mentoring young kids of the neighborhood on and off the field. He was a father figure to many and known for giving you a nickname and it stuck with you for life! Rock was known for his cooking skills and loved to grill. His ribs where legendary! He enjoyed a good time with his family and friends. Family was everything to him.

Edward was married in 1961 and out of that 26 year union was three children: Yvette, Vada (who preceded him in death) and Tracy.

Rock worked construction and was a master cement finisher. His skills was known in the construction industry across the city. Rock also worked at General Motors in several departments at the Norwood plant until it shut down, then transferred to the Dayton Truck and Bus plant until he retired after 31 years of service. He was a proud member of the United Autoworkers Local 674 union.

On February 1, 2024, Edward was called Home to Glory after a long battle with heart disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Edward Sr.; siblings, Charles Hogan, Louis Ann Murray, Thelma Dukes, Mary Walls and Jimmy Murray; sister-in-law, Bernice Murray; his beloved son, Vada Murray; and mother of his children, Donna Murray.

He leaves to cherish his memory: daughters, Yvette and Tracy Murray; daughter-in-law, Sarah Murray; sisters, Doris and Margie Murray; nine grandchildren, Dante’ (Kristin) Kelly-Murray, Derico (Tara) Murray, Monet (Rico) Murray, D’Juan Murray, Dion Howard, Dionte (Zipporah) Howard, Deric Murray, Kendall Murray and Harper Murray; 15 great-grandchildren who he simply adored, Alex, Simmone, Sidney, Jayden, Jayla, Madison, Caleb, Corie, Legend, Honor, Imari, Valor, Nahlia, Elaina and True; two special people, who he considered his daughter and granddaughter, Paula Jackson and Jamiah Davis; his special friend, whom he loved for 20 plus years, Ms. Ann; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
