Eugene Brunson, Jr., affectionately known as “Plute”, was born on July 14, 1949, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Arthur Lee (Chandler) Brunson and Eugene Brunson, Sr. He spent most of his life in Cincinnati, Ohio, under the love and guidance of his mother. He departed this life on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength and unwavering faith.
As the eldest of five siblings, Eugene embraced responsibility from an early age, caring for his younger brothers and sister with devotion and discipline. He had a protective nature, always ensuring their safety and well-being. He discovered an even larger family while in Boston, Massachusetts, becoming the eldest among 10 siblings, a role he embraced with pride and joy.
Faith was the foundation of Eugene’s life. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at an early age at New Hope Baptist Church. His passion for the Bible was evident in his frequent calls and messages, eager to share scripture and engage in discussions about God’s word. He always concluded his conversations with his signature “Be Blessed”. In his final years, he found peace and fulfillment in studying and meditating on the Word of God.
Eugene was an accomplished boxer in the Golden Gloves of America Organization, earning numerous championships. He graduated from Withrow High School and soon after married Vivian (Davis) Brunson. They raised three children, Mark, Jeannie and Cynthia. He also fathered twin sons, Derrick and Darryl Allen.
Eugene served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, with postings in Germany, Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Knox, Kentucky. Upon his honorable discharge, he pursued a career in Engineering Technology at Cincinnati Technical College. He often referred to himself as the “Chief Engineer” when teasing his younger brother, Frank. However, he was definitely a chief handyman. He had a remarkable ability to fix anything — cars, electrical systems, plumbing or carpentry. His career spanned roles at Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Veterans Affairs (VA) until a debilitating injury altered his path. Nevertheless, Eugene found solace and purpose in family.
Family and friends were at the heart of Eugene’s life. He loved talking, debating, laughing, joking and simply enjoying time with loved ones. His grandchildren were his greatest joy, and he cherished moments spent watching over them, teaching them about the Lord and sharing in their lives. In his final months, their voices and smiles brought him immense happiness.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Arthur Lee Brunson; his father, Eugene Brunson, Sr.; his brother, Calhoun; his children, Eugene Jr., Jeannie and Cynthia; and his Aunt Mary and Uncle Frank.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his sons, Mark Davis, Derrick Allen and Darryl Allen; his sisters, Brenda (Will) Jones and Vivian Brunson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ellen and Carrie Brunson of Jackson, Mississippi; his brothers, Frank (Melony) Brunson of Columbus, Ohio, Eugene A. Brunson and Robert L. Brunson of Jackson, Mississippi and Stephen M. Brunson of San Diego, California. He
also leaves behind his grandchildren, Shaunyia, D’Adrian, Lamar and Andrea Brunson, along with eight great-grandchildren; his cousin, Donna (Vincent) Curry; his lifelong best friend, Tony Gayle; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eugene “Plute” Brunson, Jr. will forever be remembered for his unwavering faith, boundless love for his family and ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy of strength, wisdom and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
