Helen Moore Obituary

Helen Eileen “Lenie” Moore, 81, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born on February 22, 1943, in Springfield, Ohio, she was preceded in death by her parents, B. Christine Ogletree and Edward J. Ogletree.

Helen attended Springfield Public Schools, where she was a cheerleader. After moving to Dayton, Ohio, she graduated from Nettie Lee Roth High School in 1961 with aspirations of becoming a nurse. While residing in Dayton, she was employed at General Motors Delco Products and later with the Montgomery County Welfare Department. While living in West Chester, she worked as a greeter at Walmart.

Helen was a devoted wife to her husband of 56 years, Richard Moore. During their marriage, they resided in Dayton, Ohio; Middletown, Ohio; Maplewood, New Jersey; and West Chester, Ohio. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Their bond was a true testament to the power of enduring love and partnership.

She was a 25-year heart transplant recipient who received recognition in the local news as an example of the health challenges women experience, especially women of color, for heart conditions seemingly more easily diagnosed in men.

As a mother, Helen was a source of boundless love and guidance to her two daughters, Heather and Danielle. She took great joy in watching them grow into compassionate, accomplished women and was immensely proud of their achievements. Her family was the center of her world, and she cherished every moment spent together, whether it was a family dinner, a holiday celebration, or a simple afternoon out shopping.

To her family and friends, she was funny, opinionated, and strong-willed. She often called you to talk on her landline phone, even when she “didn’t want nothing.” She had a sweet tooth and would ask her daughters and grandchildren if they had any chocolate on them during their visits. Though Helen was not considered gregarious, she made many lifelong friends attending Bethel AME Church and from the various neighborhoods where she resided. Helen enjoyed home decor, gardening, TV soap operas, and group excursions to the casino. She enjoyed roller-skating as a young woman and loved traveling with her husband throughout the country and to places in Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. They enjoyed socializing with friends, dancing, and playing card games.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 56 years, Rick; two daughters, Heather (Tim) Moore-Johnson of Forest Park, Ohio, and Danielle Moore of West Chester, Ohio; brother, Edward (Latisha) Ogletree of Groveport, Ohio; brother-in-law Luther (Mamie) Childs of Dayton, Ohio; granddaughters Amiah Heard and Aminah Johnson; nieces, Cristina and Chloe Olgetree; relatives and friends, Janet Casey, Phyllis Bailey, Joyce Davis, Carolyn Brown Jeffries, and Bessie Sloan; and a host of other relatives and friends.
