Iola Lee Suggs was born on February 12, 1933 to Otis and Bessie Martin, in Atmore, Alabama. She was the oldest of three children. Iola received her formal education through Atmore Escambia County Public Schools. After moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, Iola married William M. Suggs who preceded her in death. Iola accepted Christ at an early age and later joined Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.C. Wynn. She remained faithful and served under Rev. Calvin Harper and Rev. Jerome Clay. Iola loved her church family and was previously a member of the Morning Star Angelic Choir. She was stylish and classy, wearing her hats as though they were crowns.
Iola was employed by Sears, Catherine Booth Hospital and The University of Cincinnati. She retired from U.C. Housekeeping Department after 20 years. Iola had a passion for children and became a Daycare Provider for 20 years. She nurtured and loved numerous children throughout the city and remained in their lives as they went through school and adulthood. She loved spending time with her family and friends, cooking and most of all, praising the Lord — praying and then stating, “It’s already done!”
Iola was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Floyd Martin and Otis Martin; and beloved son, William V. Suggs.
She leaves to cherish her memory: beloved children, Rosa Martin, Timothy Suggs, Robert Smiley and Jackara Blanumsee; 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
