American Veteran 01

James Michael Hamner

January 25, 1949 ~ June 12, 2022 (age 73)

James Joseph Michael Hamner (Duke) was born on January 25, 1949, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the eldest son of Fannie Hamner Fairbanks and the late beloved Robert Fairbanks. James was a loving son, brother, husband, father and friend.

He married several times, having three children and a bonus daughter.

James departed this world to be with his Father in heaven on Sunday, June 12, 2022 after fighting a good fight, finishing his course and keeping faith. James had three brothers who preceded him in death, Robert Fairbanks III from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Samuel Fairbanks and Gerald Fairbanks from Cincinnati, Ohio.

From a loving home of believers, he accepted Christ at an early age and spent years working at the Cincinnati Reds Stadium with his father and siblings. James attended Cincinnati Public Schools, graduating from Hughes High School in 1968. James was immediately drafted into the Army and sent to boot camp. James served in the Vietnam and received an honorable discharge after serving two years.

James was the first of four African Americans to work as an asbestos worker for 10 years. James changed careers over the years during his 23 years of service; even stepping into entrepreneur businesses, yet he retired from Valassis after 19 years of service. Throughout the years, James was an avid sports player: basketball, baseball, softball and bowling. He excelled in softball and bowling, achieving many awards while traveling around the country for tournaments.

James leaves to cherish in his memory: his mother, Fannie Fairbanks; his wife, Alice Teresa Hamner; four children, James (Talithia “Lit”) Hamner, Latashia (Barlow) Yett, Tiffany Gaines and Tracey Wallace; three grandchildren, Jade Hamner, Jada Hamner and Noah-James Smith; 14 siblings, Rosemary Gee from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Anthony Janet from Dayton, Ohio, Bobby Hamner from Cincinnati, Ohio, Zerunnabel Yisrael from Atlanta, Georgia, Greg Fairbanks from Cincinnati, Ohio, Deborah (Gerry) Logan from Cincinnati, Ohio, Theodore Fairbanks from Chicago Illinois, Janice Fairbanks from Cincinnati, Ohio, Shelia Fairbanks from Cincinnati, Ohio, Randall Ezra (Yvonne) Fairbanks from Atlanta, Georgia, Gwen Bishop (Andrew) Terry from Los Angeles, California, Yehoshua (Tovah) YisraEL from Jacksonville, Florida, Ishiyah (Ophir) YisraEL and Tamara Fairbanks from Orange County, California; one sister-in-law, Roda Fairbanks from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; five brothers-in-law, Sameeh Muhammad, Curtis (Chris) McKee, Obie McKee, Jr., Gerald McKee and Kenneth McKee, all from Cincinnati, Ohio; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.

James will always be loved and forever missed.
