Janice Marie Speight Obituary

Janice Marie (Morton) Speight, daughter of Rosa E. (Dukes) and Thomas E. Morton, was born July 9, 1956.  Vernon Speight, son of Beatrice Speight and John Williams, was born June 18, 1954.  The two were united in holy matrimony on June 17,2000.  Together they entered eternal rest and found their place in Our Father’s arms on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

Janice loved praising the Lord through song.  She began leading songs as a Rose Bud at Rose Missionary Baptist church under Rev. Rose and later sang with various groups, school chairs, at funerals, and wherever she was asked.  A graduate of Woodward High School, Janice worked for the City of Cincinnati until her health declined and she retired early.  Wherever like took her, she always found a church home and faithfully sang in the choir at Golden Gate, New St. Paul, and Rockdale Baptist Church until her health no longer allowed.

Vernon loved to dress well and often spent his paydays at Tri-County picking out his latest wardrobe.  Known for his charm, those “player” days ended when he met Janice.  Vernon was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan and rarely missed watching a Sunday game, often walking to grab a beer before settling into cheer on his team, especially against the Bengals.  He worked for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) until his retirement.

Janice was preceded in death by her son, Darrell; her parents, Rosa and Thomas Morton; sisters, Theresa (Butt) and Deborah Ann (Pastor Robertson); and brother, Kim-Darnell.  She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Christopher (Lil Mann), Brandon, and Ja’nea; siblings Gwen (Tiny), David, Abdullah (John Jr.) Cheryl (Boo), and Edward; along with nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many loving relatives and friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice Speight and John Williams; siblings Derek, Mark, and George; and his niece, Courtnee.  He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings Elsie (aka Canady), Leonard, and Ian, along with a host of relatives and friends.
