Obituary

Deacon Johnny Lee Bell, Sr. was born on March 5, 1931 in Meridian, Mississippi, to the union of the late Mary Ella Lake and Johnnie Bell. He was one of four brothers, of which he loved and was close to.

Deacon Johnny Bell, Sr. and his wife, Christine moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1948.

Deacon Johnny Bell, Sr. joined Jerriel Missionary Baptist Church on November 26, 1992. He attended Sunday School every Sunday. He served and worked with the soup kitchen every Saturday, while talking to people within the community, that was coming through the soup line. Deacon Johnny was also on the Home Mission team, where they would visit the sick and shut-in members and friends.

For practically all his life, Deacon Johnny Bell Sr. was a member of the Operative Plasterer’s and Cement Mason’s Local #132, previously #524. 70 years of dedicated service, says the plaque that was awarded to him. Deacon Johnny became a master at his trade and was sought out by numerous contractors. His work ethic and skill were second to none. He loved what he did.

Deacon Johnny Bell, Sr. enjoyed fishing, boating and a little hunting with his brothers and friends. One of his favorite pastimes was watching TV. He loved the Road Runner, Sanford and Son, Judge Judy and let’s not forget the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. He would often sit in the garage of his home and reminisce of his cement finishing days. The sometimes long nights, hard, cold and hot days, but the fun that was had in doing so. And the pride that was felt with a job well done. His loved ones who preceded him in death: mother and father; three brothers, Willie, T.C. and Thomas; his wife, Leslie; and son, Ronald L. Bell, Sr.

Deacon Johnny Bell, Sr. made his transition from this earth to heaven on Monday, March 28, 2022 at the Glendale Place Nursing & Rehab Center. He leaves to mourn his passing: five children, Stephanie Bell-Glenn, Crystal “Cookie” (Millicent) Bell, Johnny L. Bell, Jr. “Ricky”, Verna “Toppy” (Patty) Bell-Hargrove and Cordell (Koco) Bell; 10 grandchildren, Staci Jennings, Gena (Darian) Turner, Ronald Bell II, Christopher Bell, Tyler Bell, Martel (Amanda) Bell, Nicodemus (Katie) Bell, Qua’nito Bell, Qua’ran Bell and Corlono Bell; 16 great-grandchildren; his dear friend, Diane; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and loving friends.
