Leo McNair, born on June 12, 1941, in Edgecombe County, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1, 2025, surrounded by the love and presence of family who remained devoted to him throughout his journey.
Leo was preceded in death by his beloved partner, Carmen Delia McNair, who passed in 2018. Together, they shared over 50 years of companionship and deep love, building a life centered around each other and the close-knit community of friends they cherished. Their relationship was a romance admired by all who knew them—one built on loyalty, partnership, and a love they fought hard to protect.
After Carmen’s passing, Leo relocated to Ohio in 2019 to be close to his daughter, who welcomed him with devoted care, advocacy, and unwavering support.
Leo lived a life marked by quiet strength, humility, and a steady spirit that brought calm to everyone around him. His North Carolina roots shaped his character—grounded, thoughtful, and resilient.
He is survived by his devoted daughter and caregiver, Lisa Michelle Clarke, and her husband, Marc Clarke. Leo’s greatest joys in life were his grandsons, Marc II and Jalen Clarke, who brought him pride, laughter, and purpose throughout his later years.
He is also survived by five stepchildren, including Jesus Lind and Helen, both residents of Ohio. One stepson preceded him in death. The remaining three stepchildren and their families live out of state. Although life created distance over the years, the connections formed through his marriage to Carmen were meaningful chapters of his journey. Leo leaves behind grandchildren who were part of the extended family he gained through love.
Leo is additionally survived by his brother, James McNair, and James’s wife, Diana. He is remembered fondly by his nephews, James and Jayson. Although Jayson’s children did not grow up knowing Leo closely, they remain part of the wider McNair family he cared about. Leo is also remembered by his nephew Jerry Ellis, and Jerry’s daughter, Shawna, who carry forward the family legacy as well.
Though he will be deeply missed, Leo’s legacy continues in the family who loved him and the memories they will hold close. His life and spirit will remain a source of strength and inspiration for all who knew him.
May he rest in peace.
