Lewis Dantzler Obituary

Lewis E. Dantzler was born on September 25, 1935, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the late Willie E. Dantzler and Julia (nee Means) Dantzler. He was the oldest of three children born to this union. He was called “Barchee” by his family.

At an early age, Lewis was baptized at Monk Grove Baptist Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina. When he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, he joined Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Kennedy Heights.

Lewis attended Spartanburg Public Schools, where he played basketball and football. Before graduation, Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Army 82nd and 11th Airborne Division from 1953 to 1956.

In 1984, he married his queen, Ozie (nee Tate) Dantzler.

Lewis was an avid bowler from 1959 until 2020 when his health would no longer allow him. He served as a director of the American Bowling Congress for 10 years and a devoted member of the Driver Bowling League for several years.

Lewis worked for Cincinnati Pipe, Cambridge Tile and General Motors from where he retired after 31 years of service, in 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Herman Dantzler.

He is survived by: his wife, Ozie Dantzler; brother, Leonard Dantzler; two daughters, Regina Cobb and Churline Shellenberg (Larry); one bonus son, Marc Tate; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grand-children; sister-in-law, Jean Harris; first cousin, Odessa Strawbridge; longtime friend and co-worker, Robert Banks; and a host of other family and friends.
