Porter Hughes, Jr. Obituary

Porter Hughes, Jr., affectionately called “Bill” by his family, was born on December 3, 1948, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Porter Sr. and Luella Hughes, who preceded him in death. Porter had four siblings: Mary Jackson (David), Flora “Sally” King (Robert), both of whom preceded him in death, Kelvin Hughes and Yvonnia Hughes, both of Cincinnati. Porter departed this life on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, peacefully surrounded by family.

On October 19, 1968, Porter married Linda Parks. From this union, they raised seven children: Ronald Hughes (Muchion) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Ellis Hughes (Laverne), Shana Taylor (Michael), Telly Hughes of Denver, Colorado, Aisha Hughes, Arnell Hughes and Porter Hughes III, both of Denver, Colorado; and four special grandchildren whom he helped raise, Donell Hughes of Denver, Colorado, Marquise Hughes, Robert Hughes Corbin and Elijah Hughes of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Porter went to Withrow High School and graduated in 1968. He ran track and played football. Porter received many honors in these sports. He went to CTC where he received a diploma in Surgical Technician. Porter also served in the Marines and received an Honorable Discharge after being wounded in Vietnam. He worked at Hilton Davis Chemical Plant with is dad from 1970 to 1974. Then he started work at the United States Post Office and was later promoted to Maintenance Supervisor Night Shift. Upon retiring after 30 years of service, he started a career working at Spring– field Township from 2008 until 2013. Porter was baptized and received the Holy Ghost under the leadership of the late Bishop Elzie W. Young at Bethlehem Temple Apostolic Church, 1205 Elm Street. He was a Sunday School Teacher and Assistant Trustee Chairman for many years. He later left the church under the leadership of the late Bishop Johnnie L. Johnson and became a member of Mt. Olive Apostolic Church, under the leadership of Elder Richard Behanan. There he worked faithfully until his health began to fail. Porter taught his family how to love and worship God.

Porter would sit at home and read his Sunday School lesson until his eyes began to fail. Porter also enjoyed watching his westerns (in his words he would call them his shoot-em ups). Porter loved football and had several teams, but his favorite was the Cincinnati Bengals. Porter loved extravagant things like his Cadillac cars, expensive cologne and nice suits. Porter also loved to travel and went on many trips: Hawaii, Mexico, Seattle, Washington and Florida, just to name a few. He loved the outdoors. Porter had a green thumb and had many plants. Porter leaves to cherish his memory, along with his children and siblings, 27 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; (he had four special grandchildren who took care of all his needs when he became ill); and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He will be truly missed.
