Rev. John D. Slaughter, Sr. Obituary

The Life Between The Dash!

John Docket Slaughter, Sr. was born to Charleston Slaughter and Buryl Ermine Trimble (Slaughter) weighing in at close to 14lbs on September 4, 1922 in Covington, Kentucky.

He attended Lincoln Grant School where he met the love of his life, Anna Lucille (Hughes), in 1938. They courted until her graduation from high school in May of 1942. Their 77-year union begun August 15, 1942. To this union were born 6 children, Gwendolyn Teresa, Baby Boy Slaughter, John D. Jr, Rodney Charles Sr, David Emerson, & Ray Anthony Sr.

John enlisted in the US Army Air Corps with a great desire to be a pilot. That desire earned him a transfer to Tuskegee where they would find partial loss of sight in his right eye. The dream was deferred but not denied. After being Honorably discharged in 1946, he would become employed by the Khans Meat Packing House.

While working at Khans and various other part time jobs to provide for his family, he managed to pay for private flight classes to achieve his dream to become a Pilot. John loved to fly, taking up with him several times his wife to soar above life’s normality’s.

His work at Khans for 4 years would prepare him for another “flight” moment. He would become the 1st Black US Department of Agricultural Meat Inspector and later the District Supervisor in several counties in Southern Ohio, Western Indiana and Northern Kentucky. He retired from the USDA after 36 years with Great Accolades.

He served faithfully at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church of Covington, KY in various capacities for over 30 years (which included being Chairman of the Deacon Board for 27 of those years).

After retiring from the USDA, he and his wife moved to California in 1992, he would then be Ordained a Minister in 1994 at 24th Street Baptist Church, Sacramento.

Pastor Malunex, Overseer of the Local Baptist District, sent him on assignment to Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church where he would be called to Pastor in 1995. He Pastored there until 2007. After retiring from Pastoring with Emeritus Honors he and his wife then moved to Paris TX. Even then seeking to retire the Lord continued to use Him Preaching and Teaching at Various local Churches.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Charleston and Buryl, 3 brothers: Fred, Highland & Charles, 1 sister: Josephine, 4 sons: Baby Boy Slaughter, John D. Jr, David Emerson, & Ray Anthony Sr.

He leaves to carry His legacy, His wife: Anna Lucille Slaughter, His daughter: Gwendolyn Slaughter Bernard, and One Son: Rev. Rodney Charles Slaughter Sr, 26 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 7 great, great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
