Dear Folks, may I have a moment of your time to tell you about our beloved Uncle Sammy. He was born Samuel Lee Jackson to Andrew and Elizabeth in Cahaba, Alabama on June 19, 1929. He was proud that Juneteenth was made a national independent holiday, which he celebrated on June 19th.
The family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he completed his high school education and joined the United States army in 1951 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1953, after serving in a combat unit during the Korean War.
Having difficulty finding work in Cincinnati, he and his father found work in Detroit at the Ford motor plant. They would work five days, leave Detroit on Friday night and drive to Cincinnati to visit with the family, then return to Detroit on Sunday night for work on Monday. After a number of years, the family moved to Detroit.
Uncle Sammy stayed in Cincinnati, because he had met the love of his life, Thelma Pearl Houston. They were married at Metropolitan C.M.E. Church and were married for 50 years, until her passing in 2004. He joined Metropolitan C.M.E. Church nearly 70 years ago and remained a faithful member.
He became a Mason, joining the Elisha Lodge #106 in 1965 and became Worshipful Master in 1985. He also joined Sinai Temple #59, Aeaomns, becoming Illustrious Potentate in 1989.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Andrew and Elizabeth; his wife, Thelma; his sister, Laura; and his brother, Thomas.
He leaves in grief, a daughter Molly, four grandsons, four nieces Trudy, Nancy, Lynette and Liz, one nephew Bradford, 2 special cousins; Sondra and Kris who assisted in his care. He was loved by many great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also by many first, second, and so on, cousins and friends.
