Valerie Strickland was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 13, 1956, at Jewish Hospital, to the late John Strickland and Velma Louise Gibson Strickland. She peacefully departed this life on April 23, 2026, at 9:18 p.m. in Hospice Care.
Valerie was more than a mother — she was a devoted sister, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, a cherished aunt and great aunt, and a dear friend to many. Her presence, strength, and love left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving daughter, Nikkia Strickland; her grandsons, Ricardo Allen and DaQuawn Strickland; and her two granddaughters, Kalani and Lilah Allen. She is also survived by her brother, Jonathan Strickland; her niece and nephew, Tanisha Strickland and Jonathan Strickland; her aunts, Ruby Pearl Anthony, Nina Lipscomb and Mary Strickland; along with a host of cousins and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close in their hearts.
Valerie was a hardworking and dedicated woman who spent many years providing for her family. She worked tirelessly — often holding down two jobs — to ensure her daughter had the best life possible. She began her career at Children’s Hospital, where she worked for many years as a cook. She later continued her professional journey at the University of Cincinnati, serving in various departments. In 2008, she began working for the VA Hospital, where she remained until her retirement in 2023.
Valerie had a deep love for family and treasured every moment spent together, especially during holidays, special occasions, and gatherings. She was well known for her cooking, particularly her famous macaroni and cheese, which everyone looked forward to enjoying.
She was strong-minded, outspoken, and never afraid to speak her truth. Valerie “kept it real” with her words, but beneath her boldness was a heart of gold. She was caring, giving, and would do anything for those she loved.
Though she fought through life’s challenges with strength, Valerie grew tired. Now she rests in peace, free from pain and no longer burdened by the struggles she carried. Her love, her lessons, and her presence will continue to guide her family each and every day.
Valerie’s legacy of love, strength, and authenticity will live on through all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
