The Gentle Giant, Willard Sims Hackett, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Ellard P. Hackett and Thelma Boyd McCain, and was lovingly raised by his stepmother, Mazie Hackett, whose care and guidance helped shape the man so many came to love. As the oldest of 4 siblings, he carried the role with quiet strength and a protective heart, sharing life with Yvonne Smith, Shirley Smith, and Jackie Abernathy.
He later made his home in Memphis, Tennessee, where he planted deep roots, built lasting relationships, and was deeply loved. Though Memphis held his heart for many years, he eventually returned to Cincinnati, Ohio, completing a full circle back to his beginnings.
An avid athlete throughout his life, Willard found joy, discipline, and camaraderie in staying active. He played tennis, racquetball, and handball, and enjoyed swimming regularly - embracing competition with the same grace and focus that defined his character. He also had a deep appreciation for tradition and the outdoors, faithfully participating in trap and skeet shooting. He hunted each year beginning November 15th, a season he anticipated with great enthusiasm.
On March 18, 1967, he married the love of his life, Marqua Lynell Dumas, beginning a beautiful union grounded in devotion, partnership, and unwavering love. Together, they raised two children, Tanya and Mondale Hackett, pouring into them wisdom, values, and a legacy of love that continues through generations.
On Thursday, January 15, 2026, Willard peacefully departed this life. He leaves behind a heartbroken yet grateful family: his cherished wife; his children; his beloved grandchildren (Marqua Nadel, Timber Hackett, Taylor Butts (who preceded him in death), Michael Hackett, and Mariah Hackett); great-grandchildren (Ka’Shawn, Marquan, and Breyonni Nadel); a great-great grandchild (Nyla Nadel); and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who were blessed by his gentle spirit, steady presence, and boundless love.
His life was one of quiet strength, deep love, and unwavering commitment to family. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in every life he touched.
