William R. Ross Obituary

William Richardson Ross, affectionately known as “Billy” was born in Selma, Alabama on November 11, 1948 to Ruth Lee and Isom Ross, Sr. On January 30, 2024, he slipped quietly into the arms of our Heavenly Father.

Billy spent his early years in Selma, then relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio as a young child in 1952. He attended the Twelve District Elementary School, Dyer Elementary School, Hayes Intermediate School, and then graduated from Hughes High School in 1967. He briefly attended the University of Cincinnati where he studied Economics and Psychology. He went on to achieve a certification in Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning in 1984. He continued on to complete his CDL and become a dedicated truck driver, serving as a devoted employee for Drackett, Castellini, Ram Motor Freight and Vulcan. He also completed the Peace Officer Certification at Butler Tech in 2015, where he was active in serving his community through volunteering at the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, Citizens on Patrol, local school activities and a music teacher to children. He was a political enthusiast, expressing interests in local and national elections, civil rights, the Democratic National Committee, and encouraging voter participation.

He accepted Christ at an early age through his baptism at Beulah Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended New Vision Baptist Church in 2012. He continued his walk with Christ throughout his life by ministering to others through original writing and performance of gospel music. In 1990, he decided to sing for the Lord forever and proudly proclaimed, “I’ve been blessed since”. Some of his favorite and memorable songs include, “I’m Ready”, “I Believe”, “God is Real”, “He’s Not Here” and “Jesus Said”.

His life journey ultimately led him to meet Millie Merriweather through a mutual friend (Tanya). Billy and Millie began their relationship in November 2005 and ultimately married on July 11, 2018. Throughout their time together, they enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, composing music and creating music videos together.

His unrequited love for music was evident across many facets. He was an accomplished singer/songwriter and composer. During his early years, he performed at local talent shows, became a self-taught musician by learning guitar and keyboard, and was a member of several singing groups. He was a frequent performer of the National Anthem at the Cincinnati Reds games, performed at The Black Family Reunion, and performed at the Stars of Liberty Benefit Concert. He founded New Beginnings BH Enterprises, a division of Halbill Productions, where he recorded his first album. He also was the co-founder of MillBill Media Productions in 2010, where he focused on production, arrangement, songwriting, videography and photography. He enjoyed acting, appearing as an extra in several movies, including Innocent Man, Lock Up and Rage in Harlem. He loved listening to live music, attending concerts, cooking and watching sports, including basketball, football and boxing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Lee and Isom Ross; son, LaMont Ross; daughter, Lynn Ross; stepson, Dwight Richard; sister, Creola Ivory; brother-in-law, Ocie Wilson; and best friend, Paul Riggins.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Millie Ross; children, Sherinda Ross, Rick Ross and Tasha Ross; stepchildren, John Richard, Jacqueline Lambert (John Terry) and Cheryl Austin (Kenneth); siblings, Isom Ross (Celeste), Catherine Wilson and Mary Ross-Combs; brothers-in-law, Gregory Mull and Lloyd Nesbit; sister-in-law, Sarah Nesbit; adored grandson, Josiah William Strayhorn and Josiah’s loving father, Curtis Strayhorn; grand-children, Zaire Ross, Ryan Ross, Oasis Ross, Lyric Ross and Riley Ross; step-grandchildren, Keyna Austin, Kenneth Austin, Jr., Solomon Richard, Yohanna Mayweather, Obidiah Richard, Sarai Richard, Keturah Richard, John Michael Richard and Gabriel Richard; beloved dog, Benji; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
