Wilmot A. Allen Obituary

Wilmot Augustus Allen was a fun-loving man with a contagious smile and a kind and loving heart. He dearly loved people and loved to engage them in conversation. Al was born in Charleston, South Carolina on April 4, 1934 and was the youngest son born to the late Richard and Mamie Fabor Allen. Al entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 13, 2022 at his home with his wife, Joyce close by. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Richard and Mamie Fabor Allen; his brothers, Calvin Allen, Alphonso Allen and Oscar Allen; and his son, Bryan Allen.

Wilmot attended the Charleston Public Schools and was a graduate of Burke High School. He was an outstanding basketball player during his years in high school, playing proudly for the Bulldogs and leading the team to two playoffs. Al reminisced with his classmates on the great times at Burke High School at their last Class Reunion he attended. Al matriculated at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina and later at the University of Cincinnati.

Wilmot professed a hope in Christ at an early age. His family were faithful members of Morris Brown African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina and he joined the church worshipping and serving alongside his family. After moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, he joined Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and served faithfully on the Trustee Board.

To his first union, two sons were born: Richard and Dr. Wilmot Allen (Ph.D.). He was so very proud of both of his sons for their achievements.

Wilmot enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from 1956-1958. He was employed with Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company and Traveler’s Insurance Company. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own businesses: Bond Maid Service Wilmot Allen and Associates Insurance Company and Wilmot Realty, Incorporated.

Wilmot met and married Joyce Evelyn Brown of Paducah, Kentucky on December 21, 1973. She has been his life’s companion and a loving and devoted wife in sickness and in health for nearly fifty years. God gave them two loving children, a devoted daughter, Simeon and a loving son, Bryan (deceased). One of his greatest joys was walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day. Wilmot and Joyce have been loving, caring, encouraging, dedicated and devoted parents to the children God entrusted to their care. He will be dearly missed by Richard, Wilmot and Simeon.

Holidays, birthdays, weddings and graduations were all special times for the Allen’s. The house full of family, food on the table prepared by Joyce, the culinary queen, grandchildren in high gear, laughter in the air, and robust conversations about sports, politics, international affairs, etc. was a recipe for joy and happiness. Wilmot expressed his delight in full Geechee dialect.

Wilmot’s resilient and strong spirited nature defied death for many days and nights of suffering until the end when he succumbed to death on Friday morning, May 13, 2022, after a lengthy battle. God dispatched one of his angels from glory to earth to bring Al to his heavenly home, where he can rest from all his labors and rest from all his cares.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Joyce Evelyn Brown Allen; his children, Richard Allen (Dani) of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Wilmot Allen of Nairobi, Kenya, Simeon Phillips (Michael Sr.) of Shelbyville, Kentucky; his grandchildren, Kerstin Boyd, Bryan Allen, Jr., Michael Phillips, Jr., Brandon Allen, Braylon Phillips, Mia Phillips, Breaisa Allen and special granddaughter, Shanyah Allen Brooks; grandchildren’s mother, Alexieus Brooks; his nephews, Calvin C. Allen, Jr. (Bernice), Larry E. Allen (Glenda), Randolph C. Allen, Sr. (Ann), Charles R. Allen, Corey Queen (Damary) and Derek Brown; his nieces, Deirdre Berry (Will) and Kimberley Traylor; his special niece, Alicha Allen Green and nephew, Top Man Allen (Isoria); his sister-in-laws, Dora Brown, Marilyn Queen and Janis Thompson (Taft); his brother-in-law, Donald Brown (Barbara); and a host of other relatives and friends.
